“You always want to make sure you measure the space length and width to determine which way the grain direction of the synthetic turf is going to face,” she explained. “If it is a front yard, you want the grain direction to face the street. If it is a backyard, you want the grain direction facing the back of the house.”

Getting this detail right can make a huge difference in how your turf looks under sunlight. When the grain is off, the color may appear dull or inconsistent from different angles.

Avoid This Common Mistake In DIY projects: Mismatched Dye Lots

Another crucial planning detail involves turf dye lots. Turf is produced in large batches, and the color of each batch may vary slightly. If you try to place turf from two different dye lots side-by-side, you might end up with an obvious line or color shift.

Shae shared, “The most common mistake we see is the grain direction or laying turf side by side that was purchased separately… Once those [dye lots] are sold out, the next dye lot will not match.” For large, continuous spaces, always confirm that your turf rolls come from the same lot.

Designing for Small Spaces

Even if you don’t have a large yard, you can still create a beautiful and functional space with turf. The key, Shae says, is thinking through what you need the area to do. “It all depends on what the area is being used for and what they want the area to look like at the end of the installation,” she explained.

Some people use turf in narrow side yards, patio edges, or even on rooftops and balconies. Mixing turf with plants, benches, or lighting can help you create a cozy, multi-use space without overcrowding it.

While the issue isn’t an everyday occurrence, it’s not a rare thing either. “This occurs on occasions but mainly during the summer season,” says Jessica. The problem tends to be worse in southeast-facing homes—where morning sun is most intense—and particularly with Low-E windows, which are designed to reflect heat away from the house. That heat ends up somewhere else, and often that is right on your turf.

New Fife Warehouse to Serve South Puget Sound Customers

For nearly 30 years, Synthetic Turf Northwest has been a trusted provider of premium synthetic grass solutions for homeowners, businesses, and contractors. As demand for high-quality artificial turf continues to surge, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming opening of our new warehouse in Fife, Washington, located just off I-5. This exciting expansion will allow us to better serve the Tacoma, Puyallup, and South Puget Sound areas, meeting the needs of both new and existing customers in these growing communities.

When discussing why Fife was the ideal location for the new warehouse, Daniel said, “Location, location, location.” Fife’s central positioning between Tacoma and Seattle makes it a convenient access point for a wide range of customers across the South Puget Sound. It’s right off the I-5 corridor, making it easier for contractors and homeowners to quickly stop by, pick up turf, and head to their project sites.

With its easy access and suitable space, the Fife warehouse offers an ideal setup for both retail and wholesale operations.

The surrounding community is also continuously growing, and with more construction and landscaping projects, the demand for synthetic turf is increasing. By expanding into Fife, we are strategically positioned to provide faster service to customers in Tacoma, Federal Way, Puyallup, and surrounding cities. It’s a win for us and the broader communities we serve.

What to Expect at the New Location

At our new Fife warehouse, customers can expect the same exceptional products and services that have made Synthetic Turf Northwest a leader in the industry. Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, or business owner, we’ve got you covered.

“We’re keeping all our wholesale and retail offerings the same,” said Daniel. “However, we will have a new showroom and front office space, which will be great for customers when they visit us in person.”

The upgraded showroom will offer a more immersive experience for customers. Large display cabinets will feature a wide variety of synthetic grass options, allowing you to see and feel the different products up close before making a purchase. We understand that every project is unique, and we want you to be confident in your choice of turf. From pet-friendly turf to sports field applications, you’ll be able to explore different textures, colors, and styles.

And while it’s not set in stone yet, Daniel mentioned that there could be fun future showroom additions, like a golf simulator or putting green, to help you visualize how our turf can transform your space.

At launch, the Fife warehouse will have a dedicated installation crew to help with residential and commercial projects. As demand grows, we plan to expand this team to accommodate more customers and maintain our commitment to fast, reliable installations. “Our Fife warehouse will focus primarily on serving wholesale customers at first,” Daniel shared. “But we will grow.” With two loading docks and a bigger warehouse space, the Fife location is fully equipped to handle large-scale orders, but we’ll also have convenient pickup options for those working on smaller projects.

For our professional installers, landscapers, and contractors, we’ve designed the new facility with you in mind. Quick and easy pickup is essential for keeping your projects on track, and the Fife warehouse will be geared toward providing simple and efficient service. The new location allows us to stock a more extensive inventory of synthetic grass products, so you can count on having the materials you need when you need them. And with our central location, you can stop by and pick up turf on your way to job sites across the region.

Opening Date and Promotions

While the official opening date is still being finalized, the Synthetic Turf Northwest team is working hard to have the Fife warehouse up and running by early April. When we do open, we’ll celebrate with some possible special promotions.

“Yes, of course,” Daniel said when asked about opening promotions. “We’ll have some first-order and customer referral discounts.”

Step 1 – Planning and Preparation 

 

The first and arguably most important step in installing synthetic turf is proper planning and preparation. According to Reyes, “The first steps are making sure you have your set dimensions and the proper base to install on.” It’s crucial to take your time with this part of the process because it sets the foundation for the entire project.

Start by accurately measuring your space. Knowing the exact dimensions will help you order the right amount of tu

rf, seam tape, and other materials, ensuring that you don’t end up with excess waste or not enough material to finish the job. Once you have your measurements, clear the area of any existing grass, weeds, rocks, or debris.

 

Next, you’ll need to prepare the base for your turf. This is a critical step, as the quality of your base will determine the longevity and drainage of your lawn. Jessica emphasizes that “the prep work is very important considering this will determine how long you will have your turf for.” To create a strong foundation, install a layer of crushed rock or decomposed granite (about 3 to 4 inches thick), and compact it thoroughly. This ensures proper drainage and prevents your turf from shifting or sagging over time. If you skip this step or rush through it, you may find yourself dealing with problems like puddling, bumps, or uneven turf later on.

 

Step 2 – Choosing the Right Turf 

 

Not all synthetic turf is the same, and selecting the right product for your specific needs is crucial. When laying multiple pieces of turf, it’s important to make sure that all pieces are aligned in the same grain direction. Seams are another tricky area that often trips up DIYers. A poorly installed seam can ruin the overall look of your lawn, making it appear disjointed and unnatural. Reyes stresses the importance of researching seam installation techniques and recommends watching seam videos to get a sense of the different methods available. She also advises avoiding head seams whenever possible and focusing on side seams, which are easier to work with and less noticeable. You’ll need seam tape and glue to attach the pieces of turf together, and it’s worth taking your time with this step.

Step 4 – Edging and Securing the Turf 

 

To create a polished look and prevent the edges of your turf from fraying or shifting, you’ll need to install edging. Reyes recommends using black snap edging for a neat, clean finish. The edging not only enhances the appearance of your lawn but also helps keep everything securely in place over time. Be sure to use edging nails or stakes to secure the edges firmly.

When it comes to securing the rest of the turf, you’ll need to use turf spikes, typically 7-inch galvanized nails, which are available through Synthetic Turf Northwest. These spikes hold the turf in place, preventing it from moving or bunching up underfoot. Be sure to space the nails evenly along the edges and throughout the lawn where there is higher foot traffic. 

 

Step 5 – Adding Sand Infill 

The final step in the installation process is adding sand infill. Infill helps the turf blades stand upright, giving your lawn a lush, natural appearance. It also adds weight to the turf, helping to prevent it from shifting. Depending on the type of turf you’ve chosen, the amount and type of sand infill may vary. Reyes emphasizes the importance of using the correct amount of sand infill, as not adding enough can result in a flat or uneven lawn. “Not adding the proper amount of sand infill is a common mistake,” she says. It’s always a good idea to research or ask your turf sales rep for guidance on how much infill you’ll need for your specific project.
