Many high-end turf systems offer some degree of antimicrobial protection. On the other hand, low-cost synthetic turf materials often are not antimicrobial.

On its own, artificial grass is generally less likely to attract insects such as ants, ticks or fleas, making it an excellent surface for playgrounds. There are several materials that make a suitable base for artificial grass. At Synthetic Turf Northwest, we primarily use a specialty crushed rock. Depending on the project, it can also include weed and mole barriers, drainage tiles or fall padding.

Infill is an integral part of a synthetic turf system. When placed in between the blades of artificial grass, it allows the blades to stand up and spring back to an upright position after being flattened by regular foot traffic. Without it, artificial turf would end up looking like a flattened, matted carpet.
The weight of the infill helps keep the entire turf surface in place, flat and wrinkle-free. Plus, the infill material enhances how an artificial lawn feels underfoot.
The right infill material improves drainage, which is particularly important when installing synthetic turf in the Pacific Northwest or when creating an artificial lawn for pets. On sunny days, good infill will also protect the backing from UV degradation.
At Synthetic Turf Northwest, we use a few different silica sand infill blends, depending on the application. If you have pets, we even offer an infill specifically for pet areas, which features a natural deodorizer!
We never use crumb rubber, which is a hot, messy, outdated and overall, a less effective choice.
